An Ilaje-born APC chieftain and Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of I-Larry Synergy Int’l Ltd, Prince Idowu Ilara, has described the appointment of AIG Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a strategic, lawful, and competence-driven decision.
Prince Ilara, who hails from Ilaje in Ondo State, and is an internationally recognized Information Technology Expert, made this known in a statement issued to journalists in his Abuja office .
He said the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu acted fully within the provisions of the law, despite public debate surrounding the bypassing of some senior officers in the Nigeria Police Force.
According to him, the Police Act (Cap. P19, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as amended) clearly empowers the President to appoint the Inspector-General of Police, subject to Senate confirmation.
“Contrary to some public commentary, the law does not require that the most senior officer must automatically become Inspector-General of Police. The President is constitutionally empowered to consider competence, leadership capacity, and the prevailing security needs of the nation,” Prince Ilara stated.
He explained that the position of Inspector-General of Police is not a routine promotion but a critical national security appointment that demands operational expertise, reform-oriented leadership, and effective coordination across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
“The Inspector-General of Police is responsible for leading national security operations, driving internal reforms, and aligning policing strategy with Nigeria’s broader security architecture. In such a role, leadership effectiveness and strategic vision are as important as years of service,” he added.
Ilara acknowledged that the decision has generated public debate but noted that globally, military and paramilitary institutions often prioritize strategic suitability and performance over strict seniority in top leadership appointments.
He urged stakeholders to view the appointment within the broader context of ongoing efforts to professionalize the Nigeria Police Force and strengthen national security management.
Describing the appointment as well-deserved, Ilara said AIG Tunji Disu has committed over three decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force, earning a reputation for professionalism, discipline, and consistent results.
“He has earned this milestone through dedication and a proven track record. I am confident he will bring clarity of purpose, integrity, and effective leadership to his new role as Inspector-General of Police,” Prince Ilara said.
The Ilaje Prince added that Nigeria requires a police force that is accountable, efficient, and responsive to citizens’ needs, expressing confidence that Disu possesses the experience and character required to drive meaningful reform.
