Relationship expert urges women to speak against abuse
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Dr. Funke Adetuberu, a Marriage Counsellor and Relationship Therapist, has called on women to break their silence and speak out against abuse, emphasising that no form of abuse is acceptable.

Adetuberu said this at the annual Relationship Talk Group conference held in Ibadan on Thursday, with the theme, “WOMEN: The Cynosure of Vulnerability”.

She noted that vulnerability is a strength that promotes trust and deepens connections, urging women to stop tolerating recurring abuse and instead seek help and speak out.

She cautioned that no form of abuse should be normalised, warning against dismissing abusive behaviour with excuses such as ‘he has anger issues’ or ‘he’s trying to manage the situation’.

“We are the story. We are the beauty, the pain, the courage, and the fire.

“Vulnerability is not our weakness; it is our weapon. Don’t devalue yourself; it is not a sign of weakness, rather, it’s just a sign of strength. We all know that life for women is not fair.

“Life is too short to be a casualty of war. Let’s be careful with our health. Oppression leads to depression; therefore, learn to be grateful and don’t be selective over your children,”she said.

Adetuberu encouraged women to acknowledge and learn from their mistakes, and view rejection as an opportunity for something better, rather than a battle to be won.

Mrs. Victoria Ademola-Idowu, who spoke on depression and its management, advised women to steer clear of toxic relationships, warning that prolonged exposure can lead to depression

The Convener of the group, Mrs Ebunoluwa Lawson, said the goal of the conference is to change the narrative of Nigerian women, such that they see vulnerability in a positive light.

She explained that the aim of the group is to facilitate open and honest conversations about relationships.

“Our vulnerability as women is not a limitation, but a beacon of emotional strength and deep connection to our world.

“I believe that relationships are a vital part of our lives, and it is essential to have a safe, supportive space where we can share our experiences; the joys, the challenges, and the victories.

“We will explore vital topics such as communication, trust, intimacy, and conflict resolution, among others,” the convener said.

Lawson encouraged women to be vulnerable, authentic, and open-minded, adding that women should work together to create a safe and supportive community where everyone can grow, learn, and thrive.

The event featured the decoration of Chief Ademola Babalola, Oyo State Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), as the Patron of the group.
