The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has advised Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, not to initiate any probe into the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki. Wike gave this counsel on Sunday, July 14, 2025, during a political meeting in Edo State.
He urged Okpebholo to instead concentrate on delivering development projects that would benefit the people of the state, rather than being distracted by political vengeance or retrospective investigations.
Wike explained that despite his personal disappointment with Obaseki—particularly after supporting his re-election in 2020—he believes that moving forward is a more productive path. “If there is anyone who should be calling for a probe, it is me,” Wike admitted, referring to the political betrayal he experienced.
“But I have put all that behind me. Leadership is not about bitterness; it is about vision.” He emphasized that politics should not be reduced to cycles of revenge, and he urged the new governor to rise above past political grievances.
In a rare moment of humility, Wike also publicly apologised to former governor Adams Oshiomhole, acknowledging that he had helped Obaseki politically humiliate Oshiomhole during the 2020 gubernatorial contest.
Wike stated that his earlier decision was based on political alliances at the time, but that hindsight had offered him better judgment. He told Okpebholo, “Let Obaseki and his people carry their burden and go. Focus on Edo’s progress and history will remember you for your impact, not your grudges.”
