The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Oyo/Osun Area Command, has intensified its crackdown on smuggling, recording significant seizures within a short period.
Speaking at his maiden press briefing on Friday, 28 February 2025, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Joseph Adelaja, highlighted recent enforcement successes and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling illicit trade.
The CAC stated “Within two weeks of my assumption of duty, the command has intercepted and seized several high-profile smuggling consignments, including foreign rice, second-hand clothing, premium motor spirit, and used tyres. These seizures have a duty-paid value of N165,387,000.00.”
Comptroller Adelaja emphasised that the interception and seizure of prohibited and uncustomed items have prevented the illegal inflow of products that undermine local industries, particularly rice farmers and manufacturers in the region.
“The interception of prohibited foreign parboiled rice has led to an increase in the production and consumption of local rice in Oyo and Osun states,” he noted.
The CAC disclosed that the command will prioritise public sensitisation to raise awareness about the negative impact of smuggling on the economy and national well-being.
“Through media engagements and outreach programmes, the command will empower local communities with the knowledge and tools required to report smuggling activities. This initiative will enhance public understanding of the Nigeria Customs Service’s activities and strengthen support for the fight against illegal trade,” Adelaja explained.
In addition, the command generated N2,048,487,969 in revenue between 1 and 27 February 2025. Comptroller Adelaja attributed this revenue milestone to the diligence and efficiency of the command’s officers and men, who ensured compliance with extant Customs laws and policies.
He further noted that the command has significantly reduced tax evasion through the adoption of advanced technology, including improved data analytics.
