Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday blamed the ongoing challenges in Nigeria on the lingering influence of regionalism, describing it as the core issue plaguing the country.
Speaking in Abeokuta during a visit by the League of Northern Democrats, Obasanjo highlighted that the principle of regionalism, adopted at Nigeria’s independence in 1960, continues to dominate the political landscape today.
“Where a leader comes from should not matter. What truly counts is their ability to deliver on development and governance,” Obasanjo told the group, which was led by former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau.
The former President also took issue with the group’s name, advising it to adopt a national outlook rather than a regional identity.
“One of the factors that has kept us in this predicament is regionalism. When I hear ‘North’, ‘East’, or ‘West’, it unsettles me,” Obasanjo remarked.
“Your group should be called the ‘National League of Democrats’ instead of the ‘Northern League of Democrats’. But of course, one has to start somewhere.”
However, Obasanjo acknowledged the group’s genuine concern for the nation’s future.
“It is important that we focus on how to right the wrongs,” he said.
“Nigeria is bigger than all of us, and we must view it as a unified entity.”
He also hinted at his potential involvement with the group, saying, “I share your concerns. If you become a National League, perhaps I will join you, and if I cannot be active due to my age, I might even become your Patron.”
Earlier, Shekarau explained that the League of Northern Democrats was formed three months ago, following extensive consultations.
The group, which boasts a membership of 400, is composed of like-minded individuals from Northern Nigeria who aim to influence political decisions and leadership recruitment at all levels.
Shekarau further outlined the group’s objectives, noting the need for credible leadership. “We have analysed the various challenges facing us as a nation, particularly as the largest region, and we are committed to influencing key decisions in the political sphere,” he said.
He highlighted several critical issues, including insecurity, national unity, education, and the importance of preserving and enhancing Nigeria’s democratic process.
