The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Projects, SERAP, has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive that suspension of Twitter be lifted based on certain conditions.
SERAP said it rejects the “conditional” lifting of the ban on Twitter.
The body urged the president to immediately and unconditionally lift the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria.
According to SERAP, such a measure would allow Nigerians to exercise their right to freedom of expression.
In a tweet, SERAP wrote: “BREAKING: We reject ‘conditional’ lifting of ban on Twitter in Nigeria by the Buhari administration.
“President Buhari must immediately and unconditionally lift the illegal suspension of Twitter, and allow Nigerians to freely exercise their right to freedom of expression.”
Buhari on Friday announced that he had directed a conditional lifting of the ban placed on Twitter.
The president had disclosed this in his nationwide broadcast to Nigerians to mark the nation’s 61st independence.
He directed that the suspension of Twitter be lifted, only if the conditions by the presidential committee are met.
The Nigerian government had banned Twitter due to some of the activities carried out on the platform.
Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture had said Twitter was used to carry out activities against the corporate existence of Nigeria.
